It would take me a long time to understand how systems inflict pain and hardship in people's lives and to learn that being kind in an unjust system is not enough."
--Sister Helen Prejean, Dead Man Walking"
Today, the daddy is thinking of the many world leaders who are calling for clemency for Troy Davis, who is scheduled to be executed by legal injection on Tuesday, September 23rd, at 7 p.m.
Some of the leaders include:
- Pope Benedict XVI,
- Nobel-prize winner Rev. Desmond Tutu,
- singer Harry Belafonte,
- actor Mike Farrell,
- Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL),
- Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX),
- Sister Helen Prejean,
- Sam D. Millsap, Jr. (former D.A. of Bexar County, TX),
- record producer and activist Russell Simmons.
Irene Khan, secretary general of Amnesty International, says "The facts with which the jury was presented nearly 16 years ago have fallen into considerable doubt. To allow this execution to proceed would be to knowingly countenance an irrevocable injustice."
According to Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International, over 4,000 letters and postcards have been presented to the the Georgia Parole Board on Troy Davis behalf.
He says the reason for the worldwide attention to this case that a possibly innocent man could die because of "dysfunctional application" of justice in the U.S.:
"Certain cases are emblematic of the dysfunctional application of justice in this country; the case of Troy Davis is one of them. There is ample evidence to show that Davis may not have perpetrated the crimes for which he may lose his life. Georgia's Parole Board needs to give this serious consideration and decide whether it is worth even the possibility of killing an innocent man."
The following is Troy Davis view of the application of U.S. justice in his own words:Where is the Justice for me?
byTroy Davis
Where is the Justice for me?
In 1989 I surrendered myself to the police for crimes I knew I was innocent of in an effort to seek justice through the court system in Savannah, Georgia USA. But like so many death penalty cases, that was not my fate and I have been denied justice. During my imprisonment I have lost more than my freedom, I lost my father and my family has suffered terribly, many times being treated as less than human and even as criminals. In the past I have had lawyers who refused my input, and would not represent me in the manner that I wanted to be represented. I have had witnesses against me threatened into making false statements to seal my death sentence and witnesses who wanted to tell the truth were vilified in court.
For the entire two years I was in jail awaiting trial I wore a handmade cross around my neck, it gave me peace and when a news reporter made a statement in the local news, “Cop-killer wears cross to court,” the cross was immediately taken as if I was unworthy to believe in God or him in me. The only time my family was allowed to enter the courtroom on my behalf was during the sentencing phase where my mother and sister had to beg for my life and the prosecutor simply said, “I was only fit for killing.” Where is the Justice for me, when the courts have refused to allow me relief when multiple witnesses have recanted their testimonies that they lied against me?
Because of the Anti-Terrorism Bill, the blatant racism and bias in the U.S. Court System, I remain on death row in spite of a compelling case of my innocence. Finally I have a private law firm trying to help save my life in the court system, but it is like no one wants to admit the system made another grave mistake. Am I to be made an example of to save face? Does anyone care about my family who has been victimized by this death sentence for over 16 years? Does anyone care that my family has the fate of knowing the time and manner by which I may be killed by the state of Georgia?
I truly understand a life has been lost and I have prayed for that family just as I pray for mine, but I am Innocent and all I ask for is a True Day in a Just Court. If I am so guilty why do the courts deny me that? The truth is that they have no real case; the truth is I am Innocent.
Where is the Justice for me?

Troy Davis is scheduled for execution at 7 PM tomorrow (Tuesday), September 23rd. Do what you can:
- Get the word out.
- Call the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles and the Georgia Attorney General's Office! Huffington Post put up an article this morning with working numbers for both of these offices. Call, give your name and state of residence, and briefly explain why you object to this execution.
- Focus on the specifics of this case, not general opinions about the death penalty as a public policy. Here are two important phone numbers:
- BOARD OF PARDONS AND PAROLES: 404-657-9350
- GEORGIA ATTORNEY GENERAL: 404-656-3300.
- Visit Troy Davis' website to see how you can help.

Dear MacDaddy, Thank you for the onging coverage on TROY DAVIS. IT IS SUCH A TRAVESTY. I am happy that you mentioned Helen Prajean and the Pope as two of the protesters. In an earlier comment it 'felt' to me as if you were stereotyping all Catholics as persons not respecting the sacredness of ALL OF LIFE. I have many friends who have given their life blood to defend what is known in Catholic circles as THE SEAMLESS GARMENT. This was made famous through Cardinal Bernadin,a liberal clergyman, who taught that Life is Sacred in all of its stages from BIRTH to DEATH.
I continue to PRAY that Troy Davis' life will be saved through the efforts of many like yourself who are raising the consicousness on yet another innocent life being snuffed out. THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFOTS!
somebodiesfriend: Thanks, bro.
"In an earlier comment it 'felt' to me as if you were stereotyping all Catholics as persons not respecting the sacredness of ALL OF LIFE."
nun: I'm so glad you brought this up. I wouldn't want you to stop visiting my site because you think that I stereotyped Catholics. I was referring to a few black Catholic friends of mine. I also believe I mentioned that they belong to the Republican Party. I wasn't using them to disparage all Catholics. On the other hand, I stand by everything I said about them: they care about children as long as they're in the womb. But once conceived, they're on their own. They are against any kind of government help for them, including programs like MFIB or healthcare. To them, that's fiscal responsibility. To me, it's not only not cost effective in the long-run. It's insensitive to the needs of the poor, especially poor children and mothers. But You mentioned Sister Prajean. I quoted her in the post I did just a few minutes ago.
But your statement reminds me that I should write with greater clarity. I promise you that I will.
anon: Don't you write about poetry or music anymore?
Daddy,
I am saddened by the fate of Troy Davis because of doubt. Guilt must be proven beyond doubt or we have killed two, for what? Americans have lost their inner bearings for real justice and only see the areana, the roar of the crowd. The thumbs up or the thumbs down. I pray Tuesday will not be one of those days in the Georgia red clay.
Thanks for the clarification, Mac Daddy; I appreciate the respect and integrity with which you response to peoples' responses, not only mine...And don't worry, I am a big fan of your blog. I consider it my 'ongoing education'!
I like the variety of topics you deal with....
HI MacDaddy
I just heard about this on Rachael Maddow TV show. You can add former President Jimmy Carter, and Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr to the list of people condemning this action. I also heard that the Georgia supreme court has okayed the execution, while the supreme court has agreed to hear the case four days after his execution. Some good that will do.
This is an injustice, but given the south's history of racism, and right wing social politics, I doubt that this will end good.
Tom
blueshistorian: Thanks for visiting. Yes, I'm aware of Rep. Bar and President Carter advocating clemency or a new hearing for Davis. I wrote about Pres. Carter a couple of posts ago. He is a man of integrity.
And you're right: Given Georgia's racial history, the chances are slim that the Board will change its mind. My feeling is that a white police officer was killed and they had to convict and kill a black man. I hope you and I are wrong, but my guess is that they will proceed with the execution. But the world is watching; and if they follow through with this execution, it will further dim the world's view of America.
A blatant indication of why we are not such a freedom and justice loving country, but simply another oppressive thug nation.
Yes, the Europeans are in many ways more socially advanced, culturally refined and politically evolved than we the people of the United States.
So little left and too few good people...

I am not taking a position on Troy Davis. But I am on record opposing capital punishment. It was a long journey to this destination. But, having arrived, I know I'll never be leaving. I swear that over my mother's ashes. (Sept 23 is her birthday.)
Hillblogger,
"gobsmacked?!" I've only heard that expression used in the south of Wales. Surely you're not a Welch hillbilly?
I always say, if they're going to put someone down for a murder, they had better damn well be 101% certain they've got the right man.
Spend the coin for DNA tests, do whatever you need to do because once the electricity is turned on, there's no going back.
"...if they're going to put someone down for a murder, they had better damn well be 101% certain they've got the right man."
christopher: You got that right. But, considering the evidence was so sparse (no fingerprints, no weapon found, no DNA connecting Davis to the crime), considering that the evidence consisted almost totally of witnesses (most of whom said they were intimidated by the police into saying Troy was the guy), I think what they really wanted was not justice but revenge. In Georgia, that came down to this: "A white cop was killed. So let's murder a black guy. Any black guy. An eye for an eye."
Re: "Surely you're not a Welch hillbilly?"
Heh! Not a Welsh hillbilly but a Franco-Anglo hillbilly if you like... it's a very English (England)expression and is widely used in the UK.
MacDaddy,
The cops in this nation are a protected class.
Getting a conviction against a cop in the USA is almost impossible. You have a better chance of winning the lottery.
In Texas, an infamous case involved an Officer Ramirez. He isn't white but Hispanic. Ramirez raped the woman he was dispatched to respond to in a suspected burglary call.
They had Ramirez' DNA (semen) and yet when the woman sued for rape, the jury still refused to convict this guy.
I don't pretend to understand it. All I know is I detest cops and I don't trust them. I'm white and cops make me nervous.
christopher: I agree with you about cops as a protected class. I'm sure this has something to do with law enforcement's rush to arrest, convict and execute Troy Davis. Obviously neither you and I approve of cop killers, but we do want justice for everyone. In fact, rushing to arrest any black man may exact some kind of racial revenge, but it doesn't provide justice, not even for the dead officer's family, because the wrong man, an innocent man, could very well be killed.
The Troy Davis case is a classic. Here you see where race, class, and police as a protected class of the State converge. I hope the U.S. Supreme Court can find the courage to provide a semblance of justice for Troy Davis and give him a new trial.
You say you don't trust cops. Understandable, but in this case, a cop was doing the right thing. He intervened to protect a homeless person who was being beaten in a Burger King parking lot. Besides giving Davis a new trial, I hope the U.S. Supreme Court mandates that Georgia law enforcement take a new look at the evidence and expand its investigation. According to some reports, some potential eye witnesses haven't even been interviewed-- like the clerk at a hotel with a window facing the parking lot. Witnesses have said that they heard a scream from that hotel as the officer was being shot.
True justice would not mean executing an innocent black man but freeing him and arresting and convicting the real killer of the police officer.

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.
This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.
This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!
Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus with our US FEDERAL COURTS and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!
For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.
It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.
This FACADE and HORROR of our Federal Appeal proce$$ is not worthy of the Greatest Country In The World!
