Listen up. Want to hear the truth about what's really behind the hostility against President Obama? The character in one of Jack Nicholson's movie shouted "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!" Can you?
Can you accept the fact that much, if not most, of the birthers and 9-12 marchers' attempt to de-legitimize President Obama is because they either cannot or will not accept a black man as the president of the United States?
Why not? Because deep down in their unconscious sits the notion that a black man is not a former top student and editor of their law review. He is not a teacher of constitutional law at the University of Chicago for over a decade. He is not a man "of the people" who served admirably in the Illinois senate. No, he is a no-working criminal, an overactive sexual being helping the black woman, another overactive sexual being and veritable sex factory, pump babies out of projects like water out of a faucet...He is a walking phallic symbol lying in wait like a tiger in high grass to prey on his loyal wife or-- heaven forbid!-- deflower their lily-white precious daughter.
This racist white notion resides in not all but many white Americans; and, though Obama's ascendency to the presidency may have helped a few of them to begin to see the black man as more than other, it has yet to do much to change the deeply-held racist feelings of most of them. Though careful with this words, President Carter said as much.
President Carter: Remember him? He's the one who, while president, said he occassionally "lusted in his heart" after women. And we laughed at him, didn't we?
He's the one who told us that we need to begin a comprehensive program to conserve energy so as to become less dependent on foreign oil, which is giving out anyway. We called the peanut farmer negative, didn't we?
He's the one who went to Israel, came back and wrote a book about the Israeli government's oppressive and maltreatment of the Palestinians, arguing that there will never be peace in the Middle East until we straighten that situation out. The American Jewish lobby and our mainstream media (the ones who even had the guts to report on it) raked him over the coals, didn't they? But we know now that, after more than 20 years out of office, after years years of building houses, feeding people, protecting people from dieseases like malaria and fairly judging elections all over the world, President Carter is a religious man who speaks truth, a man of integrity, a kind of quiet sense of digniy, a man who is not afraid to say what needs to be said, regardless of the costs.
President Obama and racism
Now, President Carter speaks truth again, saying much of the hostility against Presdent Obama is about racism:
"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man. I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that share the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans."
And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply."
Are you ready to take him seriously and listen now? Can you handle the truth?

Yes, this is really disturbing. I was talking to Trophy Wife about this last night. Carter is giving voice to our deepest, most unspeakable fears. We are very anxious. In this gun culture, hate speech is inflammatory. If some one takes a shot.... it will be could be with the express motive of starting a civil war. (There, I said it.)
Daddy, please take this previous comment down if you think I should have left my fears uspoken. (I can re-write it.)
Why take it down? That's how you feel. You know, in the begin of his run for the presidency, many black Americans, especially black women, were ambivalent about it. On the one hand, they thought he would make a great president: Smart, good ideas, the first African American president of the country. On the other hand, they feared for his life. Those fears are well-founded. President Obama gets 30 threats a day.
My concern is that the birther groups and Fox Network watchers and the Savage/Limbaugh radio listeners are so gullible. They don't seem to realize that these folks' words should not be taken as gospel; and most are not journalists. They're just entertainers. Yet they believe these people. They don't go behind them to check out things on their own.
FINALLY! SOMEBODY SAID IT! THANK YOU JIMMY!
I agree completely and have been blogging about this for months, but then again I don't quite have the stature of a Jimmy Carter. As a matter of fact I headlined it over at my place just a few minutes ago.
I have long maintained that these idiots, the "dumbers" wouldn't know socialism if it bit them in their very red necks. When it comes to "public option" these dumbers think it is the government opting out the public.
It is about race, and about the "Waterloo" remark and the two are often inseparable.
Well said. Hey, let's keep blogging about it. Maybe it will help. Sometimes, things need to be said, whether people want to hear it or not.
Ah, Jimmy Carter. Maybe he wasn't the greatest president ever. He is, however, the greatest living ex-president, IMO. While the others (Clinton included) have spent so much of their post-White House years lining their pockets with speaking fees and whatever else from sometimes rather unsavory sorts, Carter has made social justice his life's work. This is just another example of that.
What I see is the casual racist becoming more open about it. The type who hate flashy wide receivers and affirmative action and the NBA.
A Black president showed up just as the economic crisis exploded.Losing two more wars, our national debt in foreign hands. They see the America they grew up in,where Blacks stayed in the background and Mexicans stayed across the border and the Indians lost in the movies-it's gone and its passing seems unlamented to them. The younger ones will never have what their parents had. And now the govt and the liberals and gays have shoved a Black President down their throats ?
What else can they do but rage ? They don't read. They don't really even think.
Look at the way Health Care is centering around race. The Dumbers would rather have no insurance than have Blacks and Mexicans with their 15 unruly kids in the same waiting room as them. Their parents were the same people benefiting from the New Deal who stopped short of single payer cause they'd have had to share medical facilities with Blacks.
And don't get them started on the Mexicans.Illegal Aliens. Just like Obama, only they can't even speak the language
.
I'm ranting again, becoming a bad habit.
Sorry MacDaddy
HI Daddy
It the images that bother me. That whole "joker" image is black face, and how the mainstream media lets them get away with it is beyond me. I don't post a lot of politics on my blues blog, but the attacks on Carter, and all of the blatant racist posters at the 9/12 march tells me that it is time we all speak up since the mainstream media has it's collected head up its .............
Tom
We are dealingwith a Putsch mentality here. How much ambiguity is expressed in the sign that reads,
WE CAME UNARMED THIS TIME
Not much.
Blueshistorian: You're right: we all need to speak against this racism, however it is cloaked.
Oso: I'm glad to provide a forum for you to speak your mind.
Stimpson: You're right about Carter and Clinton, who seems more about himself than others.
Thank you Jimmy Carter for speaking authentic truth even when others are not willing to do it. And thank you MacDaddy for writing about this. I have done a lot of reflection with friends over the last couple of days and I believe things are going to get much worse-before they ever get better. The racist hatred of the right wing fanatics that was looking for a forum has found it and those that just needed a nudge to rise up in anger and join hands in the name of re-claiming America and getting government and Obama out of the way (by any means necessary)are being encouraged to step up their ignorant, vile, racist attitude and behavior. I am pretty sad, but getting angrier right now. But again, I applaud Jimmy Carter!
