--Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., 1994
It is tempting to pretend that minorities on death row share a fate in no way connected to our own, that our treatment of them sounds no echoes beyond the chambers in which they die. Such an illusion is ultimately corrosive, for the reverberations of injustice are not so easily confined.
--Justice William Brennan, 1987
Troy Davis
Finality Over Fairness
UPDATE - The Supreme Court has taken no action in the Troy Davis case as of the start of their session today, October 6. Their next conference is October 10, and the next day for issuing orders is October 14.The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied clemency for Troy Anthony Davis shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, September 12. They did so despite overwhelming doubts of Davis' guilt - and after stating last year that they would "not allow an execution to proceed in this State unless and until its members are convinced that there is no doubt as to the guilt of the accused." On September 23, The U.S. Supreme Court stayed Troy Davis' execution "pending the disposition of [his] petition for a writ of certiorari." The Court will consider whether or not to accept his petition on Monday.

We need to believe that on Monday we will get good news from the Supreme Court.
rainywalker. Yes. I've been thinking about him all weekend: how I and my friends can go out partying and drinking any place we choose and this guy is in a small cell, waiting for 9 people who don't know him and have never met him to decide if he lives or dies. Except for wars of last resort, I don't think the State should be in the killing business. Hope you're having a good weekend.
MacDaddy, much obliged for the update on Troy. I hope and pray that the SC will do the right thing.
P.S., much obliged for the link on you spot.
sjp: You're welcome. BTW: Love the new design of your blog. It's very much in keeping with the title; and this student of history loves it.
